MUSICIANS and singers from Tavistock College joined forces with children across the UK last week in an attempt to set a new Guinness Record for the world?s largest singalong.
They were joined by the senior chamber choir from St Joseph?s School in Launceston to play their part in the nationwide Simultaneous Sing, raising money for Sargent Cancer Care for Children.
The event was organised by Young Voices, who broke the world record for the world?s largest choir last Christmas when almost 7,000 children sang together in Manchester?s MEN arena.
They are hoping more than 100,000 youngsters took part, but the final total will not be known until the new year, after witness signatures have been collected and verified.
At 2.45pm last Monday, choirs throughout the UK started to sing ?Tell me Why?, a song specially written for the occasion.
More than 100 musicians from Tavistock College and St Joseph?s fitted the record attempt in during a Christmas concert they were giving for elderly people from residential homes and day centres.
Jonathan Mann, director of music at Tavistock College, said: ?The children really enjoyed themselves, as did the elderly people who had come along.
?The Simultaneous Sing added an extra ingredient to this year?s proceedings. Now we have to wait to have the record confirmed, but Young Voices have told me they are almost 100 per cent sure they reached the magic target of 100,000 participants.?
