Whitchurch Wayfarers 1st XI v Yealmpton

WHITCHURCH Wayfarers soared back to the top of the league after picking up 35 out of a maximum 40 points.

Whitchurch skipper Darren Chappell won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. Fine spells of bowling from Steve Lavis (3-8) and Chris Clapham (3-10) limited the score to 117 all out.

After the break Chris Clapham batted at the rate of an express train for a quickfire 39 not out.

The Wayfarers passed the winning post to record a maximum 20 points.

l On Sunday table-topping Exeter Civil Service were the hosts. Wayfarers batted first, losing Hall, Clapham and Chappell in quick succession.

New signing John Gosling joined Martin Credicott who had already built up a safety cushion. These two put on 87 for the fourth wicket.

A lapse in concentration from Gosling brought Mansfield to the crease, who ably backed Credicott. The latter hit two big ball boundaries to reach 73 not out and maximum batting points in the final over.

After the break, Chappell opened the bowling with Steve Lavis and Steve Bray. Civil?s early order struggled against Bray who recorded figures of 3-41.

Newly elected fielding coach Pat Mills led by example by taking a fine catch and hitting the stumps at will.

Civil?s chances of winning soon faded away and they batted out for the draw.

Whitchurch?s 15 points enabled them to top the table by four points.

This week away to Cockington Corinthians.
