THE much beloved Okehampton Rotary May Fair and its duck races took place on Sunday with the town mayor, Cllr the Rev Mike Davies, declaring the event officially open. The parade to mark the affiliation of the Okehampton Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps detachments to the local branch of the Royal British Legion included a marching display by the Corps of Drums of the Plymouth and Cornwall Wing of the ATC and the Bugles and Drums of the Devon ACF. Attractions included a dog show organised by the Devon German Shepherd Dog Rescue, fairground rides, a bouncy slide, a climbing wall, skittles, a hill climb challenge for bikes, face painting and a display of vintage tractors. There was also a number of charity stalls and street entertainers and Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band played music throughout the afternoon. Several of the town's other community organisations were involved. Okehampton Round Table held a dartboard challenge, while Okehampton Lions sold ice cream. The Inner Wheel manned a tea and coffee tent, while Okehampton Rotary itself served up tasty burgers. All monies raised will go to local causes. Peter Williams, branch secretary for Okehampton Royal British Legion, said: 'The parade went very well and the weather really helped us, and the whole fair on the day. As well as Okehampton Rotary, the town's Lions' club, Round Table and Inner Wheel were also involved in the event. The fair was not complete without the duck races along the river which resulted in cash prizes for the winners, the first prize being £100.
