A U-TURN by Tavistock town councillors last week means they will stay with their tried and tested method of choosing a new mayor. Last summer, the council agreed that committee and mayoral appointments should be made in public, with public and press present, and that there should be no pre-meeting where the appointments were agreed in advance. At the recent meeting of the council?s finance committee, members agreed to set up a group to formulate proposals for mayor making. Cllr David Best, who proposed the new group, said it was important, particularly for new councillors, to have some idea of the suitability of a candidate for mayor, through them making some sort of presentation to their colleagues. But after debate at last week?s full council meeting, the recommendation to set up a new group fell and last June?s decision was overturned. Members agreed by seven votes to three Cllr Robin Pike?s proposal to return to the system of a pre-meeting, followed by a ballot at the annual meeting.
