SATURDAY's South West I League hockey match brought local rivals Okehampton and Tavistock together for the first time in a league fixture.

Tavistock had the better of the early exchanges and after a good move down their right flank Carl Jefferies swept the ball into the net to open the scoring.

Okehampton, using their wingers well, moved the ball quickly down the pitch and Simon Garland on the left laid the ball back to Richard Jones. His first time shot was parried by the Tavistock keeper but Garland pounced and drove the ball into the net to equalise.

Okehampton took the lead when Steve Sage took his chance well, slotting the ball neatly inside the post.

The second half began with Okehampton stretching their lead following a penalty corner. Phil Hampton slipped the ball to Sage who did well to thread it under the Tavistock keeper.

Tavistock increased their pace and came back with purpose. Jefferies added Tavistock's second goal after a short corner and this set up an exciting finish.

Continued Tavistock pressure was rewarded with an equalising goal from Phil Edwards in the last few moments.

This week Okehampton travel to play Marjons.

TAVISTOCK played their first Sunday fixture of the season last weekend which meant they had to run out on two consecutive days.

The young student side were pressured from the start and soon found themselves a score down after a goalmouth scramble concluded with Dave Bright pushing over from close range.

The second half saw the visitors pressure the home side into their own half where they had a goal disallowed, the student keeper performing bravely to maintain a narrow deficit.

After fine saves by keeper Martin Osborne and a goalmouth clearance by Phil Honey, Tavistock linked together superbly, with Cowen feeding Aveyard. He put the ball to the corner for Bellard to pass inside to Jefferies who slotted a second goal.

This week: St Austell home 2.30pm.

THE game was played in splendid spirit both on the pitch and at the Devonshire afterwards.

Play moved from end to end with both defences playing well and neither sets of forwards able to score. Moyse, in goal for Tavistock, had a super game with many fine saves, but equally, the Penzance keeper saved his team on many occasions.

Half-time came with no score and, despite skipper Ralph's inspired team talk, the match continued in much the same vein.

The breakthrough came when Penzance scored from a short corner, but Townsend, who has looked likely to score for several games, equalised within minutes.

Tavistock were put under pressure with Thornton putting a shot round the post, but there was a certain 'rightness' about the final result.
