Tavistock firsts v Clyst Hydon

TAVISTOCK gained another resounding victory by 194 runs against Clyst Hydon at the week-end with a very good all round performance.

Tavistock were put into bat and after negotiating a few tricky overs at the start, Kaitiff and Gray gave tavistock the foundation that had been missing all season with a stand of 104. Kaitiff just missed out on his fifty out for 46. Gray was then joined at the wicket by Jake Luffman who made a very entertaining 65 before being well caught on the boundary by Jones. Gray fell just 16 short of his ton for 84. This left Manning and Hendricks at the crease.

Traditionally this season these most prolific of Tavistock's batsmen have usually been in at around 56-4 in the 15th over. On Saturday the score was 236-3 with four overs to go. Hendricks fell five runs short of 50 off just 14 balls. Tavistock reached a huge 315-4.

Hendricks was unable to bowl through injury. The opening attack comprised of Lee Baker and James McGahey. They both bowled tightly and were rewarded with wickets as Clyst chased the 204 runs required just to get a losing draw. Baker finished with 3-40 from his 13 overs.

Shaun Daymond bowling spin took two wickets in his first over and Clyst never looked like getting anywhere near the required totals. Kaitiff came on at the end to polish off the tail, his figures being 3-12.

This was a very proficient performance by the team who will need to continue with this form if they are to guarantee promotion at the end of the season.

Tavistock seconds v Yelverton seconds

AFTER heavy rain in the morning nobody expected a classic game of cricket that afternoon.

With a damp surface Tony Carter won the toss and had no hesitation asking Tavistock to bat. He cleaned out Tavistock opener Goodchild for five and an early blow had been struck. Three more quick wickets fell and Tavistock were in trouble at 25 for 4.

Captain McGahey and Simon Gliddon temporarily stopped the rot before Harrison yorked Gliddon for 10.

Harrison and Avery bowled impressive spells beating the bat on many occasions and always had the upper hand. Tavistock were now 51 for 5. Dave Jeffery joined Captain McGahey at the wicket and started the recovery. They put on 77 for the next wicket before Jeffery was caught for 29, McGahey went on to 69 before he was out, team mates believed this was his best innings of the year, not because of the balls he played, but the ones he left on this bowler friendly wicket.

The momentum had changed — where it looked like Tavistock would not make 100, they were now looking at 200, W. Downham played fluently for 36 and Tavistock ended on 196 all out.

Tavistock started well, having Cottrell caught behind, but Farnham and Garland put Yelverton in charge until a change of bowler had Farnham caught at first slip off Hutchins.

Yelverton were still favourites being well up with the run rate. McGahey then brought Brett Thomas into the attack. He bowled an aggressive spell, taking 3 for 43 off 12 overs. Degg hit a quick-fire 31 before Thomas bowled him, Avery and Taylor soon followed and the tide turned back to Tavistock again.

Gerry Kean was still there quickly accumulating runs. The pressure was being felt by both sides, first Staines and then Tansett took quick singles to McGahey who ran both out the second with a direct hit from extra cover.

In this pulsating encounter Carter and Keen decided to play out for a draw and honour even in this classic encounter.
