GOOD news regarding a new footbridge across the River Tavy in Tavistock?s Meadows was greeted with delight at a meeting in the town last week. Town clerk Roger Howard told members of the town council?s finance committee that he had just received a final quote from contractors to replace the crumbling bridge. Col Howard said: ?We were working on the basis it would cost about £110,000 and the quote we have is for £57,280. It doesn?t include a few bits and bobs, or moving the gas pipe, but West Devon Borough Council is paying for that. ?With any luck, fingers crossed, there is going to be a considerable saving on it.? At present, meetings are continuing to investigate the re-positioning of the gas pipe, which presently crosses the river underneath the footbridge. Once this has been resolved, contractors will go ahead and remove the bridge and install the new crossing ? the project should be completed before the end of the summer. Full notice will be given to the public before the bridge is taken down.
