A KELLY College student who has been sailing since he was six weeks old has been introduced to Tall Ships and sail training. Fifteen-year-old William Semken from Yelverton crewed on the Moosk ship, a wooden gaff yawl built in Falmouth in 1906, for the Tall Ships 50th anniversary. He joined Moosk in Lisbon and sailed as far south as Cadiz. The skipper then split the crew into two watches where they all worked in four hour shifts. The crew quickly learned to work as a team and were involved in tasks such as helming, navigating, adjusting and hoisting the sails. William lived in a confined space with people he had only just met. They made two night passages and were part of a team responsible for recording the log and sailing on their intended course while the other watch slept. In Lisbon Harbour the crew participated in a parade of sail involving more than 65 ships. William said: ?I think this adventure was a fantastic and worthwhile experience. Moosk is a wonderful ship. I fully recommend anyone to join one of her voyages.? He plans to sail on Moosk in the summer of 2007 when the Tall Ships gather in the Baltic. In the meantime William intends to do something for the Prince?s Trust.
