AS part of the 'Plymouth Armed Forces Week', Michael and Lucy Hayes will be holding an RAF Harrowbeer Archives 'Open Weekend' at Knightstone Tea Rooms on Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19, from 11am to 5pm.
On view will be documents, including the operational record books for Harrowbeer and squadrons based there, plus artefacts and photographs.
Various military vehicles will be in attendance, together with the South West Heritage Aviation Group and stalls selling model aircraft, books, toys and games. Volunteers from the RAF Harrowbeer Interest Group will have their photographic display and visitors will also be able to buy a copy of the group's recent book on the history of Harrowbeer, 'A History of RAF Station Harrowbeer — Revisited'.
RAF Harrowbeer was operational between 1941 and 1946. Many different nationalities flew from Harrowbeer, mostly RAF squadrons but also Fleet Air Arm and US Navy.
The airfield was eventually demolished in 1961 following the decision that it would not become a 'new' Plymouth Airport.
Today, visitors will be mostly aware of the airfield's existence, alongside the A386 at Yelverton, by the taxiways and the aircraft bays that are virtually as they were 60 years ago.
