TAVISTOCK Air Cadet Matt Boyle is celebrating after winning the title of Contemporary Musician of the Year at the Plymouth and Cornwall Wing Air Training Corps Music Service's first annual awards dinner in Newquay.

The Wing Corps of Drums was formed in November 2011 with many of the cadets new to playing an instrument.

In this time they have learned to play on the march, raised in excess of £15,000 to travel to and take part in the Malta Military Tattoo and entered and won three sections in the regional band competition: best turnout, best marching band and best percussion ensemble.  They then went on to the national competition where they came second in the percussion ensemble.

The awards were presented by Wing Commander Francis Reis, Commanding Officer of Plymouth and Cornwall Wing, who said: 'I am extremely proud to be presenting these awards, the Music Service has been a credit to the Wing and has performed well in a short space of time'.

The Music Service is part of the Air Training Corps, which has 23 units across Plymouth and Cornwall.  The organisation takes young people aged from 13 to 18 and offers a range of opportunities such as gliding, adventure training and academic qualifications.  Visit http://www.pcw-aircadets.co.uk">www.pcw-aircadets.co.uk for more information.
