WORK is due to begin at St Ann's Chapel on the first homes in Caradon District Council's £10.6-million programme of affordable housing. The two-year programme kicks off with a development of 19 homes, provided in partnership with Sarsen Housing Association, which is being provided specifically to meet local need. There are 36 households on the housing waiting list in Calstock parish and the homes at St Ann's Chapel are expected to be completed by December. They will include two, three and four bedroom houses and two one-bedroom flats. Nine of the properties will be for rent and the other ten will be available on a shared ownership basis. Planning permission has also been granted for 34 affordable homes on the former KB Products premises in Station Road, Kelly Bray, with work to begin in the spring. Drakewalls and Callington are earmarked to receive some of the remaining 131 units — in total the scheme is expected to provide homes for around 750 people. The development at St Ann's Chapel will be available to people on the housing waiting list who have either lived or worked in the local area for at least three years, previously lived in the area for five years and wish to return, or have immediate family living in the area. Caradon's councillor for housing John Turner said: 'Affordable housing is our top priority and we have been working hard to develop new schemes following the grant received from the Housing Corporation for 2006-2008. 'I am delighted that work is starting on the first of the affordable homes that we will be delivering with our partners over the next two years.'
