HELPING people get out of debt will be the priority of the Devon Community Legal Service Partnership (DCLSP) next year, it has been announced.
The partnership, whose members include West Devon and county councils, has concentrated on improving benefits take-up throughout the last year, but will now turn its attention to advising people experiencing serious debt problems.
Their aim is to ensure Devon residents have access to a network of quality assured providers of information, advice and legal services.
They estimate their advice over the last year has led to more than £3-million of welfare benefit being claimed.
Richard Feltham, chairman of the partnership, said: 'Our advice for people is especially timely right now, with the run up to Christmas and New Year, about avoiding the spiralling effect of debt.'
In 2004, the DCLSP is planning to take part in 100 community events across Devon, informing residents of the help available to them.
As well as debt and benefits, the service can advise on housing, employment, community care, immigration and mental health.
'A lot of the advice we're able to give, or signpost people to, is free, which is why our service is valued,' said Mr Feltham.
