TAVISTOCK ladies hockey team played the return league fixture and knew this was going to be more than just a game of skills as St Agnes previously beat them by a wide margin.
The game started with Tavistock heavily on the defensive —Fiona Dunn and Becky Hutton clearing any ball from inside the circle.
The opposition were running rings around the midfield players of Tavistock and the first goal was due to the fact that there were too many attacking players.
But Tavistock took control of the game. The equalising goal came from Sue Cork who took the ball into the D and hit a determined shot at the goalkeeper.
Tavistock opened the second half of the match under captain's orders to set deep and block the opposition from making the attack. This strategy worked perfectly as the more St Agnes struggled to get through the midfield play of Kath Collar, Emma Bowden and Sue Hornby the more stressed they became with each other. It was turning into a match that was going to be tight and adrenalin levels were high, St Agnes scored from a strike from the top of the D to make it 2-1.
Minutes ticked by and captain, Fiona Dunn, was encouraging the team to pull out all the stops and go on the attack.
With a minute-and-a-half to go a short corner was awarded to Tavistock. The ball was hit to Sue Gawman who took a shot at goal; it was deflected and Lisa Hogan ran in with her stick low and pushed the ball past the keeper to score.
This Saturday Tavistock play a friendly match at home against Essanians 2 with a 12.30pm push back.
Tavistock: Rebecca Creasy, Fiona Dunn (captain), Becky Hutton, Sue Hornby, Emma Bowden, Kath Collar, Lisa Hogan, Sue Gawman, Sue Cork, Judy Smallacombe. Player of the match: Rebecca Creasy.
