TAVISTOCK Athletic Club runner Adam Holland has come back from injury in style to win three Welsh marathons in three days!
Adam, returned with the gruelling votwo Pembrokeshire Coast Challenge after being out for eight weeks after a hockey injury left him with a hole in his leg.
This inaugural event which took place on November 6, 7 and 8 was based on the votwo challenge series concept — offering three arduous coastal marathons, point to point, along stunning coastal terrain.
Adam earlier this year had won the Brathey Challenge - ten marathons in ten days in just under 33 hours and was part of the greatest distance run by a team of 12 in 48hours on a treadmill at the Porsche Human Performance at the Goodwood Speed Festival in July.
The Welsh event attracted more than 70 entrants.
On the Friday morning a torrential downpour with 20 mph cross winds to greet the hardy athletes who made it to the start line.
Setting off in two groups – the 'walkers' and 'runners' everyone was underway by about 11am with around 26 miles of hills, mud and exciting scenery to look forward too. Votwo's own Eliot Challifour - who was using the event as a training event rather than competing - soon made his way to the front of the challenge and he was kept company by Adam - who was looking to rack up marathons number 66, 67 and 68 over the weekend as well as potentially being the first person to complete all three of the votwo challenge series events (JCC, ACC and PCC).
In the end Eliot eased away from Adam in the final miles recording a time of just on four hours.
On day two, starting from the village of Porthgain, in windy and slippery conditions it was Eliot Challifour who led Adam Holland into the finish in first place — although Adam was officially first.
The start on day three at Porthgain was preceded by a respectful one minute silence on Remembrance Sunday before the competitors got on their weary way to Fishguard and the finish at Dinas Head.
This time Adam was the first runner home, this time pipping Eliot to the post with a five hour time. In doing so he narrowly beat Ben Cuttle (who finished just minutes later) to become the first ACC, JCC, PCC finisher to complete the set of votwo coastal challenges.
