TAVISTOCK Tennis Club was a hive of activity last weekend when it hosted the first stage of the Tavistock Junior Open (Grade 5) Ratings Tournament 2006, LTA Sanctioned, scheduled over two weekends, September 9/10 and 16/17. This follows the successful trial arrangement for the first time last year. This is the twelfth year the club has run this tournament. There are 78 entrants (58 boys and 20 girls) from the South West. From surrounding areas there are 11 from Tavistock, 3 Okehampton, 2 Lifton and 1 Yelverton. The tournament is run under ratings 10.2-8.1 with age groups 18U, 16U, 14U & 12U for boys singles and 16U, 14U and 12U for girls with 16U, 12U for boys and girls doubles. There are Consolation (sometimes known as Plate) competitions for first round losers guaranteeing them at least two matches which is important for those travelling long distances. Over the two days there were some excellent matches with many three setters and barring a few all preliminary matches were completed with fine weather. Results so far for Tavistock players ? Boys Singles: Josh Brown in the semi-final of 16U, Phil Webb in semi-final of Consolation 18U and final of Consolation 16U, Owen Drage and Rufus Gould both in semi finals of Consolation 14U (in different parts of draw), Charlie Bury in the semi-final of the Consolation 12U. Girls: Liz Brown won the Consolation 12U 6-0, 6-1 which had a small entry. The semi-finals and finals to be played in the second stage this coming weekend.
