GROWING concern for one of Tavistock's last mature elm trees has prompted action this week to save it.
Roger Hutchins, of Old Exeter Road, wrote to the Times expressing interest in what may be done to save the tree sited on the corner of Abbey Bridge and Market Road near the river.
He said: 'Sadly, this tree is now dying, probably of Dutch Elm disease. I have been keeping an eye on this tree for several years, hoping that it would survive. This year may be its last.
'Many young people may have never seen a mature elm. This may be their last chance.'
His appeal has led to prompt action by the Tavistock Tree Preservation Group.
Founder member Stephanie Blanchard said: 'We will certainly take a look at it now Mr Hutchins has brought it to our attention so that it can either be treated or felled. It's good that this has come to our attention and that we can be of help in some way.'
She said the tree preservation group worked closely with local councils. The group is replanting many lost trees that have died or been felled, such as the planting of a tree to replace a lost beech recently that was struck by lightning in the town cemetery.
West Devon Borough Council's landscape officer Georgina Browne said: 'We are aware of a mature Elm tree at the junction of Market Road and Abbey Bridge showing signs of stress with a sparse canopy.
'The tree is owned by Tavistock Town Council. The town council has asked a local tree consultant to test it for Dutch Elm disease.
'Unfortunately, if the result is positive the tree will have to be felled.
'I am aware of another healthy, mature Elm in the grounds of Harewood House in Tavistock.'
Tavistock Tree Preservation Group is interested in hearing from anyone who may know of other surviving elms in the area. Contact the group at [email protected]">[email protected]
