AN action plan aimed at promoting a better quality of life for people who live in West Devon will be unveiled at a public meeting in Brentor next week.

The action plan, which is still in draft form, has been drawn up by West Devon environmental charity WestDEN and follows a six month consultation involving more than 2,000 people.

Residents in the borough were asked about their concerns and hopes for the future during the consultation, which revealed lack of affordable housing, low wages, lack of public transport, holiday and second homes and the availability of local and organic produce were issues which people felt strongly about.

WestDEN will present the key findings of the survey plus suggested actions which could be taken at its annual meeting at Brentor Village Hall on Thursday next week.

Mike Whitfield, WestDEN trustee, said: 'We are coming to the end of a very exciting process that could have a real impact on the long term quality of life in West Devon.

'Hundreds of people have made a huge effort to get involved with this challenge and to give us their views on life in the district.

'We hope to do all we can to address their concerns and to work with others to create a sustainable future for this fantastic part of the country.'

In addition to the presentation of WestDEN's draft action plan, the charity will also reveal a new set of principles underpinning the charity's work, linked with indicators to show whether the area is moving towards or away from a better quality of life.

WestDEN was set up in 1994 and has run a wide range of projects to improve life for people in the area, including rural skills training for young people and transport schemes for youngsters in rural areas.

The WestDEN annual meeting takes place on Thursday September 25 at 7.30pm.

Members of the public are welcome.
