Devon & Exeter Intermediate 4
Newtown 3rds 9
Okehampton Argyle 3rds 0
REINFORCEMENTS were drafted in to bolster Okehampton's defence as several regulars were unavailable.
It took 25 minutes for the defence to organise itself, by which time Argyle were five goals behind. But the team kept their spirits up.
Phil Evans led the charge on the right, making some excellent crossfield passes to Billy Spence. Adam Griffiths and Steve Kinsey battled hard in midfield, threading the ball through to Cummings and Ditchburn, who were spearheading the attack. Goalkeeper Matt Jackson proved himself during this phase; he commanded his area, smothering and distributing the ball to great effect.
During the final 20 minutes of the half, Okehampton were able to contain Newtown. The first half ended with the score at 6-0.
For the first 20 minutes of the second half Okehampton raised their game. The defence played a little deeper, leaving them less exposed.
Debutants Hall and Ladd held their positions well, which freed Richard Eddy to put in an outstanding performance at centre back. His tackling and defensive heading put an end to most of the threats from the opposition.
Despite going down to ten men, Okehampton maintained the upper hand. It became more difficult when Phil Yelland was forced to leave the pitch due to cramp. His contribution at right back is getting stronger with every game.
During this period Okehampton conceded a further two goals. Manager Andrew Morgan stepped on as substitute and the balance was restored.
Man of the match: Matt Jackson
This week: Lapford at home. Kick off 3pm.
