IT took a lot of wheel power and some of the participants, not surprisingly, veered off the straight and narrow but a special race in Gunnislake on the Diamond Jubilee weekend was all in a good cause.

A wheelbarrow race involving five teams from the Rising Sun Inn was a great way to raise £221.07 for St Luke's Hospice in Plymouth.

Participants, many in fancy dress, had to negotiate the course which started at the Rising Sun before visiting the four other pubs in the village.

Organisers landlady Venny Black and her partner David Black said it was 'a real laugh' and a great way to raise money for such a good cause.

Venny told the Times: 'The weather was good and everyone enjoyed it so much people asked us when are we going to hold the next one, so are hoping to hold a similar one later in the summer.'
