THE joys and benefits of walking are being celebrated with free monthly and weekly walks across West Devon.
Walking for Health Walks in West Devon is an accredited local project that is part of a wider nationally recognised scheme. The walks are led by trained and friendly volunteer walk leaders who will be sure to give participants a warm welcome.
Walks can improve energy levels, help people sleep better, reduce stress, strengthen the heart, reduce blood pressure, help manage weight and achieve better mobility while making people feel better and creating a chance to make new friends.
Walking is the lowest risk of all physical activities, yet produces massive benefits to physical fitness and mental wellbeing. It is a great way to explore the local area and learn more about the immediate community.
All Walking for Health walks are completely free — all participants need is comfortable shoes, suitable clothing and a waterproof coat if wet.
Participants are advised to bring some money if they wish to stop for coffee or tea at the end of the walk.
Walking for Health offers three different types of walks to help you either get started, develop your walking or for people who walk already.
Grade 1 walks are suitable for people who have not walked much before, are looking to be more active, or are returning from injury or illness. They are up to 30 minutes on flat ground or gentle slopes with mainly firm surfaces and accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs.
Grade 2 walks are suitable for people who are looking to increase their activity levels. They are between 50 to 60 minutes and may include some moderate slopes, steps, slightly uneven surfaces and possibly stiles.
Grade 3 walks are suitable for people looking for more challenging walks and to increase their level of physical activity. They are generally for 80 to 90 minutes and may include steeper slopes, steps, uneven surfaces and possible stiles.
Devon County Council Public Health support Active Devon and OCRA to develop Walking for Health so that more people in Devon can enjoy being part of a local health walk group.
