YOU may have heard of St Eustachius, but who was he?
St Eustachius Church in Tavistock, is holding a feast of activities this weekend to mark St Eustachius' Day, in which people can find out more about the saint.
The priest-in-charge, the Rev Michael Brierley, has laid down a cricketing challenge to his curate, the Rev Paula Rennie, and their new colleague, the Rev Tim Treanor — the Priest-in-Charge's XI will take on the Curates' XI in a parish cricket match at The Ring in Whitchurch Down on Saturday September 20, beginning at 1.30 pm.
This will provide much spectator entertainment, and be the ideal opportunity to meet Mr Treanor for the first time.
The rural dean, the Rev Geoff Lloyd, will umpire, and a free tea — to which all are welcome — will be served half-way through the afternoon.
Celebrations will continue in St Eustachius' Church the next day, on Sunday September 21, with a festival communion service at 9.45 am.
Mr Treanor will be 'sworn in' and a new altar frontal will be dedicated.
The Friends of St Eustachius' will mark the festival with a cream tea in the parish centre at 4 pm, and then all are invited to a special service of evensong at 6 pm at St Eustachius' Church, where the guest preacher will be the lively dean of Exeter Cathedral, the Very Rev Jonathan Meyrick.
All are warmly invited to come and find out just exactly who St Eustachius was.
