FOR those with hearing or visual impairment a service with a difference rode into Tavistock on Thursday. The Devon Sensory Bus service, run by Devon County Council, offers a free, confidential service for people with hearing and/or visual impairment. The bus includes special listening devices, lighting and colour contrast. On board is a comprehensive range of equipment to help with everyday difficulties such as hearing the doorbell, telephone and television, or aid in reading newspapers. Graham Murford, bus co-ordinator, said: 'The great thing about a mobile bus is that we can get into remote areas. Elderly people who live in such places may have to catch two buses to get batteries for their hearing aid. The more people use the service will help keep it going.' Graham and colleague Anne Humphreys have between 20 to 30 visitors each day visiting the bus. One of those using Graham's services was 99 year-old Rose Joyce from Chollacott House Nursing Home, who came along with her daughter Vivian Iles. Joyce had her hearing aid cleaned and Graham also gave it new tubing to help Joyce hear more clearly. Vivian said: 'The service is excellent. They are always very caring, helpful and friendly.'
