VOTERS in Tavistock's North ward could go to the polls next month to elect a new member of the town council.
After the death of Cllr Harry Pearson earlier this month, there is a vacant seat on the council which needs to be filled.
Roger Howard, Tavistock's town clerk, said: 'More than ten people have asked for an election, so now it's up to candidates to say they want to be elected.'
Tony Rose, committee officer at West Devon Borough Council, said: 'We shall be publishing the notices on Thursday, February 3rd, then people will have until noon on February 11 to get their nomination papers in.'
Mr Rose said, provided there are candidates willing to stand, an election date of March 9 has been 'pencilled in'.
If no candidate is found, the town council has the power to co-opt a new member.
At present the town council is made up of ten independent members, three Liberal Democrats, one Conservative and one Labour representative — Cllr Pearson was a Liberal Democrat.
