ARMY Cadets from Okehampton are among 100 young recruits from North Devon taking part in a summer camp in Shropshire.

The camp is being held at the Army Training Camp at Nesscliffe, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire for almost 500 cadets from Devon, including officers and instructors.

The camp, with its Nissen hut accommodation, has a dining hall, sports hall, sports pitches, climbing tower, miniature range and assault course, while the training areas next to the camp roll down to the River Severn.

Major Ashley Fulford, who commands the North Devon area Cadets said the cadets would have an extensive programme of activities, both intensive and varied, including canoeing, climbing, abseiling, sailing, mountain biking, target shooting and military style exercise.

Evenings, apart from some relaxation time, involve a series of challenging activities between the cadet groups for the Camp Challenge Trophy.

Helicopters from a nearby RAF base provided the opportunity for some cadets to gain flying experience. A day out to Alton Towers will be a treat at the end of camp.

Visiting the cadets will be Brigadier R Carey , Commander of 43 Wessex Brigade, the area TA Brigade, the Lord Lieutenant of Devon Eric Dancer and Honorary Colonel Lt Col Tim Courtney.
