TWENTY girls from 3rd Tavistock Brownies enjoyed a wonderful evening of kayaking and canoeing in the River Tavy at Lopwell Dam recently.
Girlguiding leaders and members of the Tavistock and District Outdoor Education Forum kindly gave up their time to give the Brownies this wonderful experience. The girls, aged seven to ten years-old learned how to handle their kayak safely and some daredevils were able to stand up and even swap kayaks with each other mid-stream!
It was a particularly memorable evening for seven of the newest Brownies who made their 'Girlguiding Promise' as they were enrolled while standing and saluting in their kayaks on the water.
The evening ended with a barbecue on the banks of the river.
Rica Olver, Brownie leader and Tavy Division commissioner, said that Girlguiding in Tavistock has nurtured Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units in the town for almost 100 years.
Currently there is an acute shortage of adult leaders which is threatening the future of several units. For further details, visit http://www.girlguiding.org.uk">www.girlguiding.org.uk
