WEST Devon recycling officer Jane Savage has won a top national award for her work with local schools.
Earlier this year, Jane led a campaign to collect old Yellow Pages at primary schools across West Devon.
Almost 6,000 directories were collected by the 16 schools involved and all were shredded by Cornwall Paper Company to be used for animal bedding.
Earlier this month, at a ceremony at Longleat, she was presented with the ?Silver Birch? award in the Yellow Woods Challenge UK Finals.
Following the ceremony, Jane said: ?I?m really pleased to accept this award on behalf of all the schools in West Devon that helped to recycle the directories.
?The children were extremely enthusiastic and their efforts really paid off ? to be runner-up in a national competition is fantastic. Next year we?ll be going for first place! ?
The Yellow Woods Challenge is a simple, educational and fun environmental campaign run by Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust working with West Devon Borough Council.
Schoolchildren bring old Yellow Pages directories to school for recycling and those collecting the most directories per pupil win cash prizes.
For every pound awarded to schools by Yellow Pages, a matching pound is given to the Woodland Trust to support its new tree planting campaign, Tree For All.
All participating schools are given free educational materials containing fun environmental activities to teach children about paper, recycling and woodland conservation.
