THE lack of floral colour on Tavistock?s Bedford Square has come in for criticism ? from a resident of the Isles of Scilly. The resident sent Tavistock Town Council a letter of complaint, asking why there was neither floral colour nor greenery in the town square. Janet Sturmer said she had seen the greenery removed from the metal baskets on the hall wall and the only flowers were those for sale at Friday markets. She said: ?I understand that the hall wall containers need repair before being considered for replanting, but if other similar market towns can maintain and water such enhancing displays, why cannot prestigious and award-winning Tavistock?? The council has responded to Mrs Sturmer, claiming there was always concern about vandalism to flower tubs and hanging basket brackets. Deputy town clerk Rosie Keyhoe said work staff plan to fill the metal baskets on the town hall wall with pot plants, in an effort to brighten up the building. Cllr Brian Trew said: ?I think it should be noted that the council does an awful lot with displays and it?s a little bit cheeky for someone who lives in the Isles of Scilly to complain about what is happening in Tavistock when they don?t even pay the rates. ?I think it might be appropriate to thank them for their input and remind them that the council does a great deal on this already.? Cllr Maxine Gibson had another suggestion: ?Why don?t we be cheeky back and ask them for a gift of daffodils??
