THE Ruby Run took place on Sunday June 12, and Burdon Grange Care Home in Highampton held a 'Ruby Weekend' of their own to mark the occasion.
All of the home's residents played some part in the weekend, as did the majority of the staff. On Saturday June 11, residents, staff, family and friends embarked on the home's 'Ruby Ramble'.
The ramble was tailored to individual capabilities so that all residents aged between 18-65 and live with either a physical disability or acquired brain injury could take part. Starting from either the Ruby Trail cycle path or from Highampton Village Hall, every participant managed to cross the finishing line at Running Lane. They collected their medals from Pam and Richard Whiterow, who helped organise the water station for the ramble.
The fundraiser was particularly significant for Amanda Hanson, a staff nurse at the home. Amanda's son Luke suffers from cardiomyopathy, and the residents decided to share the funds raised from the walk with the Cardiomyopathy Association. Luke joined in with the ramble, chatting with residents and other walkers around the route.
The home expressed thanks to everyone who helped plan and run the event, including the council, Sergeant Penny Channing, Val Letheran, Kelvin Sowden and John Parnell.
Six members of staff at the home took part in the Ruby Run relay event the following day. Contending with wet and windy conditions, the team finished with a commendable time of just over two minutes and thirty seconds. They were cheered on by staff and residents from the home, and are already looking forward to next year's event.
Staff at the home are still calculating the money raised from the event, and hope that it is a handsome sum to divide between the residents and Cardiomyopathy Association.
