RESIDENTS in Chillaton will be enjoying barbecued food and a lively village atmosphere tomorrow (Friday) at a street party in celebration of the royal wedding.
Organisers of the sold-out event, Chillaton Public Hall Trust, are expecting more than 220 people to flood the Chillaton to Lifton road for a hog roast, barbecue and to be entertainment by a Ceilidh band and dancing in the square.
Secretary of the Chillaton Public Hall Trust Howard Asbridge said: 'The event has been organised by the Chillaton Public Hall Trust, although once it got off the ground, the trustees have been greatly helped by lots of local residents.
'The trust exists because it looks after the capital raised when the original village hall was sold many years ago.
'We decided to hold a street party as part of our aim to recreate some of the village activities that used to go on when we did have a hall.
'The trust is sponsoring the event, but it will be largely self-financing.'
The trust will also be holding a raffle at the street party, from which half of the proceeds will go to ShelterBox and half to offset the cost of the party.
Devon County Council has issued a temporary traffic order for the closure of the Chillaton to Lifton road from 3pm to 11pm on Friday April 29.
Mr Ashbridge added: 'We have been amazed by the response, with more than 220 tickets sold, even though it is just a village event and tickets have only been available to local residents and their guests.
'We have now completely sold out and unfortunately cannot take any more applications because of the limitations of our catering facilities and our insurance cover.'
