MARY Tavy Jubilee Group got together with some helpful volunteers on Sunday to perform a much needed litter pick.
Starting at the Coronation Hall, the 21-strong litter picking team was able to collect 14 bin bags of rubbish.
Mary Tavy Jubilee trustee Ali Fife Cook said: ‘We did this as a one off. We have held litter picks before that the council has organised but we did this one as the Jubilee Group – we were aware of the need for a litter pick. This was the first one in three or four years.
‘We worked out that with everyone’s labour it was about 60 hours of work. Tea and cake was arranged after by the WI.’
She said that the team was also keeping an eye out for areas with Japanese Knotweed.
She added: ‘The first step is to find out where it is, then with the help of Dartmoor National Park Authority we hope to eradicate it from Mary Tavy. We did find it in a few different places.
‘People said afterwards that they had a lovely afternoon. We put people into teams so that they weren’t on their own. We cleaned up a couple of garages in the middle of Mary Tavy not long ago too, to make the centre look nice.’
Michael Fife Cook also took part in the litter pick.
He said: ‘People are starting to take more pride in the village. People are wanting to come out and do these things. We had eleven-year-olds right up to the old folk and I include myself when I say that.
‘There was a good cross section of people who had come out to showcase our community.’
