POPULAR postman Dennis Bater retired from his Hatherleigh round recently after delivering to the community for more than 20 years.

Dennis, who lives in Hatherleigh, has a recognised Post Office service record of 19 years, although he first began as a relief postman for the area three or four years before taking up a more permanent role.

Dennis said over the years he had worked with a host of different postmen and three postmasters at Hatherleigh Post Office.

?Over the years I have met a lovely lot of people whom you get to know so well,? he said. ?I have seen people in all stages of mood and dress in the morning!?

He said the town had grown a great deal in the two decades since he first began delivering around Hatherleigh.

Dennis is also West Devon borough councillor for the Hatherleigh ward and ran the town?s fish and chip shop for more than 30 years.
