MORE than 30 young people from the Hatherleigh area got to try their hand at stencil art and DJ-ing last Saturday. A stencil art workshop in the main room in the town hall provided the opportunity for young people to design posters and cards. The feedback was very positive and a T-shirt stencilling workshop is planned for February. Young people were also given a musical masterclass as Ash, a professional hip-hop, shared his skills. They were shown how to mix, scratch and demonstrated what they had learned at the evening youth-run event. Chase, a rap artist from Hatherleigh, worked with eight young people to develop lyrics for the evening performance. Stephanie Chaney, 14, made her debut appearance before an enthusiastic crowd rapping about her hopes for the future. The evening event, sponsored by Seize the Moment, gave young people the opportunity to run their own music night. Ryan Salt, 19, Paul Coward, 19, and Tony Chasty, 19, all from Hatherleigh, organised a showcase for live music, rap and dance. The crowd who gathered to watch the event were so impressed they requested a break dance workshop for half term. Seize the Moment, an organisation working in Bideford and Torrington as well as Hatherleigh, is dedicated to providing positive opportunities for young people, assisting them to make things happen for themselves. The group is currently looking for young people who have skills they would like to share and develop ? the next series of workshops will take place during February half-term.
