A SUMMER autotest organised by Plymouth Motor Club saw 17 people compete for its Allen Trophy in Tavistock's Bedford Car Park last Sunday.
Competitors in the club sport class were after valuable points at this crucial stage in the club's season, competing for the trophy.
The Allen Trophy was inaugurated in 1934. There have been only three competitors who have won it three times in succession, and hoping to make it four in a row this year was Plymouth Autotest Champion Tony Carver (pictured).
This year, Tony was sponsored by Tavistock Tyres and Exhaust Services and with their support he was experimenting with a tandem footbrake system, which was still in its infancy.
Tony said: 'It's very useful on tight turns but remembering the route and deciding which footbrake to use against the clock is challenging.'
By lunchtime, six competitors were within ten seconds of each other with Tony a further eleven seconds behind.
As the afternoon progressed, Tony's experience showed —taking three fastest times and finishing first in class.
The fastest time of the day was taken by Paul Inch, the event sponsor, in his lightweight championship-winning car.
Plymouth Motor Club expressed thanks to West Devon Borough Council for the use of its car park.
The next round of the Plymouth Motor Club Championship 2008 will be at Parkway Industrial Estate on August 6 at 6.30pm.
