South West Peninsula League Division 1 East

Okehampton Argyle 2

Totnes & Dartington 2

THIS was a game Okehampton should have won comfortably, but they turned in one of their poorest displays of the season and had to be satisfied with a share of the spoils.

Totnes looked sharper in the opening quarter of an hour as Argyle struggled to string two decent passes together. After seven minutes, the home defence was slow to react as Jordan Hopkins carried the ball into the box and fired home to give Totnes the lead.

Six minutes later, the home defenders failed to cut out a well flighted cross from Charlie Baxendale and Peter White headed home superbly to put the visitors two up. This seemed to wake Argyle up and they began to carry the game to Totnes with Adam Mortimer looking threatening.

After half an hour, a through ball for Steve Williams seemed to be played too far ahead of him, but the Okehampton player chased the ball and when the Totnes keeper spilled it, he was able to fire into an empty net to reduce the arrears.

Six minutes later, a lovely Okehampton move developed down the right and Adam Mortimer laid the ball across for Steve Kinsey to fire home the equaliser. The home supporters were now looking forward to the second-half as it seemed only a matter of time before Argyle would sew up the match.

But they were to be disappointed as Okehampton slipped back into the style they had at the start of the match, with too many hopeful long balls and not enough constructive passes. They still should have won the game as Matt Mortimer had what looked like a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside, and Kinsey had an almost certain penalty appeal turned down by the referee.

Totnes still threatened at the other end and had chances to score, but Argyle produced the miss of the day, when Adam Mortimer beat two defenders and laid the ball across to Chris Wills. With the goal at his mercy, he somehow managed to fire straight at the Totnes keeper, when it looked easier to slot it into the net. It was a rare mistake for the player, who had a good game in midfield.
