TAVISTOCK Pannier Market's five star loos have wowed judges for a second year in a row in the national Loo of the Year Awards.

The market toilets have been awarded yet another five star grading for the standard of their facilities and was a National Category winner in the retail and markets section this year.

The market toilet attendant, Alison Ewings, has been keeping the toilets spick and span for last two years.

She said: 'I'm ecstatic. I'm really, really pleased. Last year was the first time we entered the awards, and we decided to enter again this year and won again.

'It's all very well winning the awards, it's keeping it up that's the hard bit. But we've done it.'

There were more than 1,500 entries for this year's awards, and every entry underwent a surprise inspection.

The public conveniences were assessed against more than 100 judging criteria including signage, decor, fixtures, fittings and overall standards of cleanliness and management.

Every loo receives a star grading ranging from one to five.

The Loo of the Year Awards have been giving recognition to the best 'away from home' toilets in the UK since 1987.

Town mayor, Mandy Govier, on behalf of the town council and all users of the immaculate loos, gave heartfelt congratulations to Alison for her hard work and ongoing contribution to making the pannier market one of the best markets in the West.

'This is a brilliant achievement,' said Cllr Govier.
