THE Nice Warm Socks project from Okehampton charity Wren was among the runners up at the National Lottery Awards on Saturday. Wren spokesman Kevin Buckland said the publicity from the event, which was televised live on the BBC, was invaluable. ?For a small charity like us to be on prime-time national TV, you couldn?t buy that. For us the increased awareness is invaluable,? he said. ?We are are all winners. ?We had a great time meeting up with the people from all the other National Lottery categories, and this has led to the possibility of future joint projects with other organisations.? The Nice Warm Socks project uses folk song to develop the basic communication skills of children with severe learning difficulties and physical impairments. With funding from the Lottery Awards For All scheme, the Wren Music team of professional composers, musicians, songwriters and educators worked together with speech and language therapy specialist Shan Graebe and staff and students from the Ellen Tinkham School in Exeter to create songs relevant to young people with special educational needs.
