NORTH Tawton Town Council has secured funding to refurbish the memorial park on the outskirts of the town.

The park, situated in a pleasant area with trees, a football pitch, traditional swings and play equipment, will benefit from the updating, said town clerk David Bettoney.

Funds have been obtained from the National Lottery, LEAF and West Devon Borough Council.

Plans have been drawn up in consultation with members of the public in the town and it is planned to incorporate items for all ages, including a shelter, innovative adventure equipment, a new level football pitch and a skateboard area.

Mr Bettoney said: 'This has been carefully designed to address concerns regarding noise and will be sunk into the ground and landscaped and will incorporate modern materials rather than the older hard surfaces.

'The town council is very grateful to those who have provided the funding and to the members of the public who have given so much time to obtaining information and raising the money.

'It hopes the work will start shortly with a target completion date of the end of October. The work will be done in stages and while areas will need to be closed at times the contractors hope that access can be maintained at all times.'
