THE Tavistock business built up by internationally known auctioneer Robin Fenner has been acquired by a vibrant young Tunbridge Wells-based company.
The Fine Art Auction Group Ltd has an extensive portfolio and is in the process of selecting further locations in the United Kingdom. Tavistock represents a strategic move into the West Country.
'Eventually, the group will be a nationwide network of auction rooms bringing together the expertise of numerous auctioneers and valuers — each with a proven record,' said Mr Fenner.
The flamboyant auctioneer, with his trademark black eye-patch, said he would 'still be spear-heading' the Tavistock saleroom — which has carried his name for the past 20 years.
He said this new era for the business would mean items could be sold where they were best suited — geographically and economically.
'I wish I was 15 years younger, because the challenge of being part of a vibrant young company does leave you feeling like the grandfather in the pack.'
Mr Fenner said he would remain as a consultant with the company.
'I will look forward to greeting buyers and sellers to Tavistock,' he said. 'I will still be very much involved — I just won't be working eight days a week any longer!'
Over the past decade, together with his wife, Sheila, Mr Fenner has built the business into an internationally known auction house with a long list of prestige sales to his credit.
'I don't think any other similar firm in Britain has had any more media coverage than we have,' he said.
And although being acquired by the Fine Art Auction Group means a little more leisure time for Mr Fenner, he will still be at the helm conducting sales.
'They will not be taking my gavel away — I shall still be an auctioneer. I'm a frustrated actor and this is my stage. With a black eye-patch and one dodgy leg, the only part I'd get is Long John Silver if I wasn't an auctioneer!'
