A FORMER triathlon world champion with multiple sclerosis has recently completed a 10K endurance swim, weeks after finishing chemotherapy.

Trish Deykin, from Milton Combe, was diagnosed with MS in 2005 while competing on the world stage of triathlons, taking gold and silver medals.

She worked her way up and competed for Team GB in her age group and became British and World Champion in 2013 as well as a silver medallist at the Europeans the same year.

Trish was unable to compete for the past two years due to receiving a chemotherapy type treatment for her MS.

She said: ‘A short time out of racing for a long term gain, although that didn’t stop me winning last year’s Bere Pen 10 and the Tavy 7. But because of this treatment, I’m not allowed in the gym or pool for at least two months due to the lowering of my immune system and avoid anyone with a cough or cold.’

The first time Trish was allowed to train again was August 1, giving her just a few weeks before the event.

She said: ‘September 6 was the big day for my 10k swim and after three and a half weeks of training the nerves had started.

‘The weather was gorgeous at the start at Totnes but it didn’t make the river any warmer – it was 13 degrees and a bit of a shock to the system!

‘There was never a moment when I thought “I can’t do this” it was more of “I’m bored now!’

Trish finished the sixth female and second in her age group, she added: ‘Although it’s not a race, there are the likes of a few people, me included who think of it as a race.

‘I’m really chuffed with my place and had a lovely hot tub at the end in Dittisham to warm me up.’

Trish beat her target of £500 for both of her chosen charities: MS Trust and Sportability, raising £1200, £600 for each charity.

She added: ‘I’d like to thank Kountry Kit, Active Sports, BAM clothing, Zone 3 and Mansbridge and Balment for their ongoing support.’
