A HATHERLEIGH couple who married in the era of the Great Depression and when King Kong was terrorizing cinema-goers will next week celebrate a remarkable 72 years of marriage. It was on February 28, 1933, that Ralph John Hurford married Emily Snell, at Holy Trinity Church, Burrington. Mr Hurford farmed for 43 years at Eastern Town Farm, Meeth before retiring 29 years ago. The couple now live at Torswood, Hatherleigh, and regularly attend the Poppy Day Centre at Wardhayes Residential Home in Simmons Way. The couple have two daughters and their family is far flung, with children and grandchildren in Devon and Cornwall as well as Spain and Australia. There will be a double reason to celebrate as the day is also the 16th birthday of their fifth great grandchild? Bede Daniel Brennan.
