LIGHTING in the east end of Tavistock Pannier Market is to be improved, following consultation between power suppliers and the town council. The town's properties committee last week heard that following investigations, it would be possible to increase the power supply to this end of the market — it is currently very dark and has sparked complaints by traders in the area who claimed it could be dangerous. Wayne Southall, the council's works superintendent, said the lighting could also be improved in the colonnaded area of the pannier market — but it would cost the council an extra £3,000 to £4,000 per year in electricity bills. Mr Southall said work to improve the lighting situation should be completed by January — meanwhile, further investigations were taking place to see if lighting could be improved in Market Road. The power supply to the market was also to be routed underground after Christmas. Town mayor Cllr Caroline Keane asked if the council used energy-efficient bulbs in the area. She was told that although these were cheaper and more environmentally friendly to run, they did not provide enough light.
