Jewson South Western League Cup Final (played at Torpoint)
Tavistock 1
St Blazey 2
THIS was the Lambs' first appearance in the final since the 1983/4 season and as then they had to be content with the runners-up spot - despite scoring all three goals.
Torpoint's ground was in splendid condition but a strong wind made it a little difficult for the players. It turned out to be the Lambs' downfall when in the fifth minute, Darren Babb under pressure from Andy Waddell skied his clearance. As it dropped in the goal area keeper Andy Meeds could not get hold of it and the ball bounced into the net.
Tavistock equalised on 37 minutes with the goal of the game and it would have been a worthy winner. Jeff Babb picked the ball up on the edge of the area and despite close contention from defenders curled his shot past keeper Dave Philp.
Tavistock faced the wind in the second half and were a match in all departments but they could not break down a resolute defence and went behind midway through the second half.
Glyn Hooper made room on the wing to send in a cross that Meeds pushed onto the post only to see it cannon off defender Dave Symons and into the net.
Tavistock pushed for the equaliser as the game reached its conclusion with Jeff Babb seeing his goalbound header cleared off the line and substitute Ben Pinkham's shot from the by line saved by Philp.
Despite losing the Lambs can be proud of their achievements in the cup this season. Away victories at Newquay and Liskeard followed by the magnificent semi-final win over Falmouth brought them to the final.
