Lenwood 5

TAVISTOCK's squash team travelled to the Bideford home of table-topping Lenwood. The team were expecting a rough match against the unbeaten league leaders and Lenwood did not disappoint.

Adrian Bower, playing at number five, was convincingly beaten by Gavin Stubbs, who dominated from start to finish. Adrian failed to compete with the speed and accuracy of the North Devon man and lost 9-3, 9-1, 9-0.

Next on court was Pete Middleton who was to lose 3-0 to the experienced Ivan Quick.

This game was tighter than the previous contest and Pete should have nicked at least a game when leading 8-5 in the third.

However, the Lenwood number four capitalised on a string of errors and ended up taking the game and the match 9-6, 9-5, 10-8.

The next two games proved equally disastrous for Tavistock. Stuart Cox and Colin Grice playing at number three and two respectively.

Stuart won only two points losing 9-2, 9-0, 9-0 to Greg Short, who never gave Stuart a look in. Colin only managed a point, losing to the former premier league player Paul Chappel. Paul oozed class from start to finish and the match was over in 20 minutes.

This left Tavistock number one Andy Gauler to face Andy Chappel, the brother of Paul and current Lenwood number one. This game was a battle of legs and lungs against finesse and county class. Unfortunately for the Tavistock man, after a lengthy contest, finesse and premiership ability won the match 9-5, 9-6, 9-5.

This was Tavistock's worst result in a number of seasons. The five games to nil victory boosts further Lenwood's attempt to return once more to Devon Premier Squash.
