SUPERB! was the overall verdict from last weekend?s ?Fun Day in the Meadows?, organised by Tavistock Lions Club (writes Lindsay Bright). People came in their hundreds to take part in the many activities on Sunday. Greenfingered gardeners entered into the 158th Tavistock Flower and Craft Show, competitive canines took part in the dog show, and Beth Standing was crowned Carnival Princess. A total of 23 individuals took part in the Flower and Craft Show with more than 85 different entries between them, in categories ranging from single flowers to intricate tapestry, baking and photography. Fifty children from Meavy Primary School won the children?s cross stitch category after creating two cushions for their retiring head teacher, Mary Williamson. This was the first year the club members have arranged this event and they were encouraged by the positive comments and suggestions from visitors. With the Companion Dog Show event, dogs were able to try out the new agility course and have a go at dancing to music, before entering into the breed, novelty and best child handler classes. Lion Cheryl Thomas said: ?It was a fantastic day. We raised more money this year than we did last year, especially with the very successful agility course.? Organiser of the Fun Day, Lion Ken Shield, said: ?The day was very well supported. We would like to thank all the local people of Tavistock who attended and we look forward to seeing everyone at the carnival day procession on Saturday at 6.30pm.? The day before the fun day, Joe Steer won the under one year section of the baby competition, while little Teal Campsie Maynard won the one to two year section. They were given engraved glass goblets and a goody bag from sponsors Dukes and Boots the Chemists following the event, which attracted a bumper entry of 48 babies.
