FOOTBALLERS locked horns with rugby players in the scrum in Okehampton at the weekend at the annual Neal Cousins Memorial Day. A grand total of £2,500 was raised for charity by the day, which culminated in a rugby match between the two sides hosted at the rugby club. The rugby players notched up six tries to two, to complete a final winning margin of 34-15. In the earlier match between the respective youth teams, the rugby club also came out on top. Andy Luxton, who helped organise the event said: ?It was an excellent turnout again from the people of the town. Luckily we had good weather and a good total was raised for charity.? The sum will be divided three ways; between Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF), Okehampton RFC and Okehampton Argyle FC. Andy said big plans were already taking shape for next year?s event. ?Next year it will be the football club?s turn and it will be the tenth anniversary of the first match. We are going to try to put on quite a major event for the town,? he said. The event has been held each year to remember Okehampton sportsman Neal Cousins who died of leukaemia in 1997, aged 24. Following the presentation of the trophy to the winning side, cheques of £1,500 were awarded to ELF, Okehampton RFC and Okehampton Argyle from the proceeds of last year?s event.
