MY goodness, how times and the prices of things have dramatically changed over the past 70 years.
Going through some old family photographs recently including one or two of my late father and mother during their courting days I was reminded of the time when my father informed me of a 'grand night out' (for those days) which he spent with my mother in Plymouth on the princely sum of five shillings!
The money was spent this way: two shillings rail fare from Bere Alston to Plymouth, two shillings for a trip to the cinema to see Boris Karloff in 'Frankenstein's Monster', one shilling for two portions of chips after the cinema show.
Well, for curiosity and amusement sake I roughly calculated that if they decided to make a similar 'grand' night out to-day it would cost them between £15/£20! The mind boggles.
