A SPECIAL meeting to help young people in West Devon overcome barriers to employment was held in Tavistock last week.

The meeting was organised by Devon and Cornwall Careers, with the aim of giving an overview of the Government initiative Learning Gateway.

Key agencies like the employment service, the youth justice team and West DEN's Ley of the Land were asked to support the initiative, providing essential free services to help young people get into work, training or education.

Laurie Palmer, of Cornwall and Devon Careers, said: 'We have organised this event since our work in Learning Gateway depends so much on our key partners.

'With their knowledge we can give more targeted help to young people most in need.'

Diane Simpson explained the work and role of the Youthwize project — a support, advice and information service for young people in rural West Devon.

'I am really proud of the work we've done with some young people excluded from education — we have been able to help with training and show them that there are opportunities out there — our results have been really positive,' she said.

The meeting, held at the Ordulph Arms by permission of the owners, will be followed by a further meeting in six months.
