Tavistock took part in and hosted the annual P&D (Bowl) Handicap Tournament on August 3 when it was unfortunate that only three clubs participated.
But there was a good afternoon?s tennis which Tavistock won for the first time under the new format with an exciting finish decided on the last set of ladies? doubles, Sue Parsons and Annie Jefferies winning 6-4. Runners-up were Plymstock with Devonshire third.
The tournament is played on the basis of each club playing the others mixed doubles, men?s and ladies? doubles. Tavistock team: Sue Parsons/Simon Thomas, Di Kersey/Chris Hill and Annie/Mike Jefferies.
Friendly match. Away against Bude won 7-1 MXD only and a renewed fixture. Annie/Mike Jefferies v their 1st pair; 6-2, 6-3: v 2nd pair; 6-3, 6-2. Pat Warne/David Isaac v their 1st pair; 5-7, 6-4: v 2nd pair; 6-1, 6-4.
l Junior member Rhys Dunford has reached the final stage of the 10U group of the Devon Robinson Challenge (2003) to be played on August 25. This is a good effort as out of 20 players he came fourth in the preliminary rounds played at different venues through the year. Also, he has recently played in the Royal Mail Plymouth Open Tennis Tournament, juniors? 10U section where, although losing in the first rounds of the main tournament and plate events, he did well against some strong opposition.
