A WEST Devon woman took to the stage at Buckingham Palace to sing for the Queen at her Diamond Jubilee celebratory concert last week, along with the Military Wives Choir.
Sophie Jury, a teacher at Tavistock Primary School, is a member of the Military Wives Choir which was established by Gareth Malone as part of his BBC series The Choir.
The group of wives achieved huge recognition following their poignant performance of Paul Mealor's 'Wherever You Are' at the 2011 Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.
The Military Wives Choir featured on the official Diamond Jubilee song 'Sing' co-written by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber, which unites some of the Commonwealth's most talented and diverse musicians. The choir was chosen to lead the Commonwealth Band in both the recording and the Diamond Jubilee Concert.
Gareth Malone and the Military Wives Choir were selected as the perfect exponents of singing in the UK, having scored the Christmas number one with their choral hit 'Wherever You Are', as well as a number one album.
The choir touched the hearts of the nation when Gareth first introduced them to singing just a year ago on BBC Two and, in addition to raising well over half a million pounds for charity, their runaway success has inspired more than 40 new choirs to be set up on military bases across the UK.
Sophie, who is engaged to Andy who is a Royal Navy air traffic controller, said: 'Being given the opportunity to sing at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert was a truly humbling experience.
'I felt very proud singing on the stage with fellow military wives. I will never forget this experience.'
