REGARDING the controversy about re-siting the war memorial, I feel many people would agree it needs to be removed from the degrading position it now occupies, hemmed in by parked cars and adjacent to the public toilets, a position not worthy of the sacrifice made by the men whose names it bears.

I have a suggestion. Could not the churchyard wall facing the town hall be removed and replaced by a raised step with the memorial partially or wholly recessed into the centre at ground level, depending on road space required?

Seats could then be situated along the remaining length of the raised area for public enjoyment of what would be an open square.

Recessing their memorial in this way has been successfully accomplished by Horrabridge village as many may be aware.

We could create a wonderful opportunity for visitors and townsfolk to really appreciate our wonderful old country town and the soldiers, whatever denomination, who gave their lives to allow them to do so in peace.

So, in a quiet moment, while sitting gazing at the lovely architecture of the town hall and Court Gate we could spare a thought for them and their sacrifice and thank them.
